The Kneeling Figure
Georges Minne (1866-1941)

In Forest-lez-Bruxelles, Georges Minne discovered his favoured theme: The Kneeling Figure, a naked, introverted adolescent kneeling with a bowed head, fragile and isolated from the world. This motif recurs throughout his work.

The sculpture stands prominently at the base of the staircase, with the surrounding space designed around it.

Spirit of Fire
Dolf Ledel (1893-1976)

The black Labrador marble fireplace was designed to accommodate the gilded bronze andirons titled Spirit of Fire by Belgian artist Dolf Ledel.

I am the Rose of Sharon, 1968
André Willequet (1921-1988)

André Willequet studied monumental sculpture at La Cambre. In 1947, he was awarded the second prize at the Prix de Rome. His inspirations include the human body, the couple, and maternity, with stone being his preferred material at the time.

From the 1950s onward, Willequet began working with wood. Once he realized the significance of voids as volumes, he sought to explore the relationship between emptiness and fullness. A few years later, he discovered lost-wax casting, a technique used for the sculptures in the Labyrinth by René Pechère (1908-2003).

Stained Glass
Jaap Gidding (1887-1955)

The van Buurens displayed their originality by commissioning Jaap Gidding to design a large stained-glass window with geometric patterns for the first landing. The warm colours, highlighted with a touch of green, allow light to filter through differently according to the time of day. This stained-glass window is an integral part of the house, conceived as a total work of art.
