James Ensor (1860-1949)

A Street in Ostend, 1893

James Ensor occupies a prominent position among the great masters of modern art. Until the late 1880s he painted works of an impressionist nature, after which he turned to expressionism.

The artist was not looking to win people over, but to settle accounts with the society around him. The painting in the collection is part of his Ostend period.
